Today marks my 1-year anniversary of being a stand-up comedian. Not that I needed it, but Facebook even helped remind me by posting an “On This Day In 2010” status for me. It was in Worcester at the now defunct Orlando’s Comedy Jam. I was there to record Ryan Staples‘ set so he could submit it to the Boston Comedy Festival. I had been working on some jokes, there weren’t that many comics and the night was running short, so I asked the host if I could try it out and he let me go up. The crowd was very supportive and obviously I was hooked.
To celebrate the anniversary, in keeping with a year long (involuntary) tradition, I have no Friday bookings so you won’t be able to catch my anniversary performance. I do, however, have this fun picture of the first time I performed stand-up:
Same mannerisms then as I have now, except I try not to wear graphic T’s anymore. Maybe someday I’ll throw something up on YouTube for everyone to enjoy.
Hey Matt, great to hear you’re still going strong man! I am still wondering if I’ll make the year, two year, three and more year marks.
It’s addicting and fun laughs or not. What do you think about the progress you’ve made in the last year? I think that’s the interesting part fr myself. Already in the short time I’ve been doing this I cab see a marked improvement on my comedy.
It’s still terrible of course but I do see and try to record progress.
Take it ez bud, hope to see you again soon!

Progress is a funny thing. From the beginning I felt comfortable on stage just because I’ve done a lot of other kinds of performing before. I’m not sure I’m any funnier than I was a year ago, in fact it feels like I’m less funny (just because of all the funny people I see.) I think the biggest progress is in figuring out what kind of comedian I want to be. What kind of comedian do I think I am? Well I think that gives me an idea for another blog post.
