I want to become a successful blogger. I think what I write about is interesting, entertaining, and informative. I post a couple of times a week and promote my posts through a variety of channels in hopes that people will read what I’ve written. Well, I recently found out that Facebook is ruining what progress I’ve made on its front.
I lament for the day when people used to bookmark sites and visit/refresh them multiple times a day until new stuff was posted… or maybe that was just me. Now it’s not important to check a website until someone writes something of wit in a comment under a post on Facebook, making this news tough to swallow. I know there are some people who rely on Facebook to check out my web site for new stuff. It was already tough, some people do end up on my site via Facebook but people don’t always see my status updates (only so much can fit in a feed with all those updates by people whom no one really cares about but are friends with regardless) and much less often do people comment on them. Now I find out only a fraction of my audience will be “permitted” to see my posts without a cost to me?
I don’t have the money to promote my posts on Facebook, so I have no choice but to realize my Facebook page is an unreliable way to generate traffic and making sure people are notified of new content. So, please consider the following methods of having updates sent directly to you:
- Subscribe via RSS – this is really the most reliable method. Set up services/programs like Google Reader or Firefox to automatically receive new blog posts.
- Bookmark the site – Ctrl+D or Cmd+D on PC or Mac, respectively. Check the site daily to see if I’ve updated (and of course if you did that, it would help with my overall traffic)
- Subscribe to Blog via Email – enter your email address to the right of this post under “Subscribe to Blog via Email” and each new post is emailed to you. (email addresses aren’t shared with anyone and you won’t get spammed)
Alternatively, you can also follow me on Twitter for updates and liking my page on Facebook still doesn’t hurt.
