Back in September I auditioned for, and made the main stage cast of, the newest improv entity in Boston, ComedySportz. ComedySportz is an international franchise of improv clubs and theaters with locations in 24 different cities. It’s very different from all the other improv I’ve ever done. In contrast with Big Gulp, which is my long-form improv group, ComedySportz is short-form, competitive, improv. It’s a little more like Whose Line Is It Anyway? though we play as two teams of four, rather than four people in a free-for-all. The improv is based around games, which are a set of rules the players must follow (again, like WLIIA?).
The show format also resembles a (very generic) sporting event with the host being a referee, an announcer in a booth, and players wearing uniforms of home and away teams. Though, the improv itself has little to do with sports unless it’s called for. The show is also intended for all ages which is something I’m not used to working with (although, to be honest, I’ve got a pretty clean mouth, anyways).
I’ve had two shows so far and they’ve both been fantastic. Audiences have also really been enjoying the show and really getting into them. The “actletes,” as we are known, rotate on a per show basis, so I’m not sure which upcoming shows I’ll be on yet* but through the end of the year we have shows:
Saturday, November 2 – 7:00PM
Saturday, November 9 – 6:00PM at the Boston Comedy Festival
Sunday November 10 – 5:00PM at the Boston Comedy Festival
Saturday, November 23 – 10:00PM
Saturday, November 30 – 7:00PM
